Early bird gets the worm

I spent more than half of my summer going to bed at 4 A.M. and sleeping in until about noon. My sleep schedule did a 180 when I got a puppy! I got my puppy at eight weeks old when he mostly just ate, pooped, and slept, now at 11 weeks he's constantly looking for something to occupy his time. Today he was up at 5:00 ready to eat his breakfast and begin his day. I usually feed him breakfast at 6:00 so I tried to distract him with toys for as long as I could. I also worked on his biting/nipping which has become a pretty bad habit this past week. I spend a good hour talking to a friend last night about how to handle some of his bad behaviors and she gave me some great pointers, so for the next few days I'll be working with him and hopefully (fingers crossed) I will see some improvement.

One of the tips my friend gave me was to take him for walks and try to wear him out so this morning I did just that. Bruno and I went on a 25 minute walk around the neighborhood...can I just say the way he walks on leash has improved tremendously!! It was so exciting to see the improvement and it can only get better from here. My friend told me to take him on multiple walks a day and Bruno is napping as we speak whereas normally he would be trying to nip at my ankles to get my attention because he was dying of boredom. I've never had a puppy before so I'm learning all of these things for the first time.

I"m glad that I took on this responsibility because I think it's helping me become more responsible for my actions as well. A month ago I would have still been sleeping and my first meal of the day would have been at around 1 P.M. It's 6:52 today and I've had a cup of coffee and a piece of toast and I've gone on a twenty-five minute walk! I still plan to head to the gym later today so I'll have two workouts under my belt.

I'm happy to have my little man take on the post graduation life with me because so far he's changed my life in a positive way (besides all the scratch marks haha)! I'm going to get into bed and watch a little TV....maybe even nap for a little bit then get a head start on my school work for next semester! That's the perk of waking up early, I can nap wake back up and still have the rest of the day ahead of me!

Make today great :)

It takes 21 days to break a bad habit

I'm not sure where I heard this but word on the street is that it takes 21 days to break a bad habit. Today was day one for me! I went to the gym and knocked out 33 minutes of cardio (didn't want to lie and round to 35 haha). I've done the whole "today is the day" thing far too many times before and I'm sick of quitting after three days or three weeks. I need to make this a lifestyle change.

Baby steps...

I came home after the gym and there was absolutely nothing in the fridge to eat so I began putting my sneakers back on and almost drove to Subway. Almost. I was just making up an excuse to go out and spend money and eat a bunch of carbs. I stopped for a minute, opened up the fridge again and saw that I had a full carton of eggs, delicious low fat cheese, and milk. So instead of driving to Subway, I made myself some scrambled eggs with a tiny bit of salt and pepper and had a side of cantaloupe that my dad so graciously cut up for me! Was it the most delicious and satisfying meal on the face of the earth? No...haha I loveeee food, especially rich carb filled food, so this healthy protein meal wasn't my number one meal of life BUT it will hold me over until my snack in an hour or so which is my delicious Greek yogurt.

I don't want to be miserable the whole time I work on this lifestyle change but I understand that at the beginning it's going to be a little tough and it's going to require me to be patient, tolerant, and motivated. I'm so proud of myself for taking my shoes back off and making myself a healthy lunch. Yes, that Subway foot-long would have been delicious but I know the instant I finished it, I would feel extremely guilty.

I don't plan to starve myself or micromanage what I eat for the rest of my life but I know in order to curve some of these cravings I get I'm going to have to be hard on myself in the beginning and slowly reintroduce some of the things I love when I learn some self control and portion control.

So far day one is going well! I even ate breakfast today which I don't usually do.

Here's to the first of 21 days and if someone out there is reading this and today's your first day too...Good Luck! :)
